Detail:

We stayed in April 2024

We didn’t actually stay as we were alone and weren’t keen on being so far way from other people being just 200 steps from the top of the famous staircase

Parking area for visiting the church and attempting at least some of the steps

Plenty of space when we were there, but this might not be the case on a nicer day.  We stopped when the rain ceased for a little while – the sun even came out and we had rainbows 🙂

What’s the site access like? It’s up a fairly steep hill but not a problem at all

How much is it? Free

Services?:   No services – although there are toilets at the top behind the church

What’s the area like?:

We walked up the final 200 steps and I visited the church, we had a chat with an Australian couple and then walked down the whole staircase, with little diversions to look at grottos etc.

Lamego itself looks really lovely and we have no doubt that we’ll return 1 day.  We did try to stop on leaving, but there really wasn’t anywhere suitable for us to park in the town 😦

We then walked back up to the van (so we did do all 686 steps, just not all in 1 go!)

Absolutely a must see.  Highly recommended.

The next section of the N2 dropping down (fast) to Peso Da Regua is very wiggly and very beautiful.  Vines planted absolutely everywhere 🙂

Would we return?

Yes – definitely. 100% 🙂
