Good for: A 2nd stopover on the way from Rome to Pompeii (and visiting the monastery of Montecassino 🙂
Address: Cassino, Province of Frosinone, Lazio, Italy, 03043
Questions:- (This review is from the point of view of motorhomers driving a Bessacarr E769 tag axle – 8.56m)
Relevant Post:- From Rome to Pompeii in 2 stops (with a visit to Hadrian’s Villa thrown in 🙂
Detail: Dedicated motorhome spaces in the monastery car park, shared with tourist buses. Payment is for daytime when the monastery is open so includes entrance (which is well worth it). It covers 24 hours.
No services, but there is a water fountain, and there are toilets that are open during the monastery opening hours (9.30am – 6.30pm) and cost 50 cents
Felt perfectly safe 🙂 You are able to move up to the upper level of the car park, which is flatter, once all the cars have gone, but need to move back down by 9.30am the following morning.
What’s the site access like? If you don’t mind driving up a mountain with several switchbacks then it’s no problem 🙂 We met a coach coming the other way around a hairpin both on the way up and the way down, but it wasn’t an issue 🙂
How much is it? 8Euros for 24 hours, but this is really for the entrance to the monastery. If you arrive after 6.30pm and leave before 9.30am then it’s free.
What’s the area like?:
Wonderful views from the parking area. We visited the monastery which was the first Benedictine monastery established, so was a very important location. The cathedral is beautiful – I have never seen a crypt, or crypt entrance, like it!!
Also the site of a major battle of the 2nd world war – which is mind-blowing when you see the location
Moving on: Next stop was a move further south at Montecassino (also high up in the hills, with 6 hairpin bends to negotiate 🙂
Would we return?? If we were to visit this area again we wouldn’t hesitate to return
