Where we stayed on our Motorhome Roadtrip to Italy (via France and including Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and France on the way home)

We have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Italy, ensuring that we saw all the iconic sites that we came for. However, we would not return – it’s not the best for touring in a van. We didn’t find it overly motorhome friendly (it was good enough, shall we say…)

Having said that we would recommend doing it as we can’t imagine seeing everything that we have by doing it any other way. Enjoy 🙂

Below is the full list of sites that we used, together with links to my reviews (where applicable – they’ll all have a link eventually!) and a score out of 5 (in our humble opinion, and considering location, outlook, price, cleanliness and facilities.

Note: I will update this as I write new reviews and blog posts

  1. 3/5 – Guarbecque, France (free) – first stop within an hour or so of coming off the train
  2. 4/5 – Muizon, France (free) – 2nd stop from where we visited Reims
  3. 3/5 – Chaumont, France (small fee) – stopover by a canal with a LeClerc close by
  4. 3/5 – Sennecy-le-Grand, France (free – pay for services) – park up in front of the castle 🙂
  5. 4/5 – Bourgneuf, France (free – with toilet) – overlooked by the Alps; get ready to cross them! Relevant Post = Crossing the Mont Cenis Pass
  6. 4/5 – Chianocco, Italy (free) – shortly after crossing into Italy over the Mont Cenis Pass. We stopped earlier than planned as we were tired 🙂 Relevant Post = A Scenic Road Trip: Chianocco to Cuneo to Celle Ligure, Avoiding Toll Roads
  7. 3/5 – Cuneo (free – although it should have been 5Euros) – trying to avoid the toll roads we came across this delightful city. Well worth a visit. Relevant Post = A Scenic Road Trip: Chianocco to Cuneo to Celle Ligure, Avoiding Toll Roads
  8. 2/5 – Celle Ligure (free) – our first sight of the coast, this stop was a little close to the motorway and therefore a bit noisy. Relevant Post = A Scenic Road Trip: Chianocco to Cuneo to Celle Ligure, Avoiding Toll Roads
  9. 2/5 – Marina di Massa (19Euros pn + tourist tax) – We made a mistake here, very disappointed on arriving on site (although we did stay 2 nights and were a little happier the 2nd day). On leaving we found that the area about a mile further up the road looked much nicer. Relevant Post = A Scenic Road Trip: Chianocco to Cuneo to Celle Ligure, Avoiding Toll Roads
  10. 4/5 – Lucca (10 Euros pn) – we loved Lucca! And the parking area was very good too, within easy reach of the town. A definite recommendation 🙂 Relevant Post = Next stop on our Italian Adventure: Exploring  Lucca and Pisa
  11. 3/5 – Pisa (12 Euros pn) – another great stopover not too far from the iconic tower (one of the highlights of our trip was the 1st sighting). Again within walking distance, although we then discovered that there was a navette….!! Relevant Post = Next stop on our Italian Adventure: Exploring  Lucca and Pisa
  12. 1/5 – Florence (20Euros pn) – we struggled trying to find something near to the city, firstly heading out on a long twisty road to a campsite where the ACSI ‘supplement’ for being over 7.5m was actually paying full price of 38Euros, then seeing something more suitable only to find it was closed (it would have been perfect), and finally ending up on what was basically a storage area. We wouldn’t recommend, unless you have the same issues we did and want to see Florence! Relevant Post = Next Steps – From Florence to Orbetello on the coast, via Monteriggiani and Siena
  13. 5/5 – Monteriggiani (16Euros pn) – we were headed for Siena but spotted this little site that was just a few miles before. We ended up staying 2 nights – it was the first time we found the beautiful views that we had been expecting all along. Highly recommended 🙂 Relevant Post = Next Steps – From Florence to Orbetello on the coast, via Monteriggiani and Siena
  14. 2/5 – Siena (20 Euros pn) – basically a coach park in the middle of a large roundabout, but perfect for visiting Siena. There are toilets, but they cost 1Euro for each visit.. Relevant Post = Next Steps – From Florence to Orbetello on the coast, via Monteriggiani and Siena
  15. 3.5/5 – Orbetello (campsite 21Euros pn – they honoured the ACSI price for our whole stay as there was a typo in the ACSI book and I questioned it). Nice campsite, but packing them in due to it being Republic day/weekend. Relevant Post = Next Steps – From Florence to Orbetello on the coast, via Monteriggiani and Siena
  16. 3.5/5 – Rome (Camping Flaminio – 23Euros pn + tourist tax) – decent site for visiting Rome (we went to Seven Hills first – it wasn’t really suitable) Relevant Post = Exploring Rome: The Reality
  17. 3.5/5 – Anagni (free) – On our way to Pompeii now, but definitely too far to do in 1 hit (for us anyway). Bit of a trek up the hills and around the town, but worth it for the views and the historic town itself. Relevant Post = How to Get to Rome from Pompeii…
  18. 5/5 – Montecassino (8Euros, but this is the fee for entrance to the monastery, so basically free). 100% recommend (again a drive up encompassing 6 hairpins is well worth it) Relevant Post = How to get to Rome from Pompeii…
  19. 4/5 – Pompeii (Area di Sosta Terraza di Hermes – 25 Euros pn) – although a bit of a walk (perfectly manageable) this was a much better choice than the ACSI sites close to the ruins Relevant Post = Pompeii, Vesuvius and Herculaneum
  20. 3.5/5 – Termoli (20Euros pn) – crossing over to the East coast we found this stopover in a marina and stayed 2 nights. Relevant Post = East Cost of Italy
  21. 1/5 – Pineta (Camping Pineta – 19 Euros pn + tourist tax) – from Pescara up to Rimini most campsites are blighted by being right next to the train line. We didn’t appreciate the significance of this, but left (tired and cranky) after 1 night…. Relevant Post = East Cost of Italy
  22. 4/5 – San Marino (Centro Vacance – 23Euros pn + tourist tax. Much more relaxing! We stayed 4 nights :). Relevant Post = San Marino
  23. 3.5/5 – Venice (Camping Serenissima 21 Euros pn + tourist tax -.20 each pn). Wow, wow – do not miss Venice off of your itinerary. Relevant Post = Should you visit Venice?
  24. 2.5/5 – Verona (10Euros pn) withing easy walking distance of the city. Relevant post – Heading home from Venice
  25. 3/5 – Lake Garda, Peschiera (Camping Butterfly – 23 Euros pn + 1.50 each tourist tax pn) – Nice site, but full of lots of German schoolkids and lots of change-overs. Intended to stay 4 nights, left after 2. Relevant Post = Heading home from Venice
  26. 4/5 Lake Garda, Garda (Area Sosta – 21 Euros pn). After the previous site this was heaven! Although Garda itself is more expensive. Definitely glad we moved 🙂 Relevant Post = Heading home from Venice
  27. Area Neumarkt Egna (10Euros, but not yet open as the electric doesn’t appear to be hooked up). We didn’t stay (as couldn’t, but worth a look as seems likely to open at any time)
  28. 2.5/5 – Gilfenklamm, Italy – South Tyrol (free) – in the shadow of the Alps deep in South Tyrol and with a walk to the gorge (we didn’t do it as it rained quite hard in the morning 😦 ) Relevant post =
  29. 3.5/5 – Fussen Mobil, Germany(22 Euros with all services – no washing machine!) – for visiting Newschwanstein – you have a choice of 3 areas next to each other). Relevant post = Neuschwanstein
  30. 4.5/5 – Wangen im Allgau, Germany – 15 Euros. Not too far travelled. Lovely town to visit. New site – perfect. Relevant post =
  31. 3.5/5 – Neuhausen ob Eck, Germany (free, with EHU. 5Euro donation suggested) Close to an open-air museum (a bit like the Weald & Downland where The Repair Shop is filmed). Relevant post =
  32. 5/5 – Titisee – near the lake (Area Bankenhof next to a campsite – full use of facilities for a fraction of the price 🙂 Relevant post =
  33. 3.5/5 – Emmingdingen – north of Freiburg. Opposite outdoor pool 🙂 10 Euros to park; 3.50 to swim 🙂 Water and toilet emptying extra (1 Euro & .50 Euro respectively) Relevant post =
  34. 3.5/5 – Freiburg – in the sports stadium car park (check there isn’t a game on!) 13E per night…… Buy green sticker for LTZ at BMW dealer first if you haven’t already got 1. Relevant post =
  35. 3.5/5 – Wissenbourg, France (free – no services) – opposite an open air pool (very welcome in 37C heat) 2E (for the pool, not the parking. That was free). Lovely town. Relevant post =
  36. 5/5 – Bitche, France (free, with services – pay for water/electric) by a Fort (citadelle). Relevant post =
  37. 4/5 – Verdun – Camping Car Aire (13E pn + 5E for a lifetime Camping Car card). Relevant post =
  38. 3.5/5 – Camping Bon Accueil – Luxembourg (25E pn). Relevant post =
  39. 2.5/5 – Kockelschuler P&R, Luxembourg – (Free for 24 hours, then 10E pn) – we didn’t actually stay here, just parked and took the bus into the city, then decided to move on – but we do have information to share! (included in review for Camping Bon Accueil). Relevant post =
  40. 3.5/5 – Arlon, Belgium – (free) (the ‘official’ aire would have scored 4.5/5) Relevant post =
  41. 4/5 – Lac l’eau d’heue aqua centre Froidchapelle, Belgium – (free) – camping amongst the trees opposite a leisure lake with beaches 🙂
  42. 4/5 – Jeugdstadion Stellplatz, Ypres – (16E pn – booked) – really enjoyed this spot, and are so glad to have attended the Last Post ceremony
  43. 3.5/5 –Camping Car – Braydunes, Dunkirk (19E) – Got the last spot. Bit too far away from the ferry really (partly because I took us the wrong way in the morning as I thought we were closer…)
